And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
Do you ever think about what you think about?
Pause and consider the thoughts bouncing around in your brain so far today.
Now go a step further and notice how your feelings are following along with your patterns of thinking.
Are you anxious? Overwhelmed? Over-the-moon?
Noticing and acknowledging your emotions (yes, even the negative ones) is a good thing. They signal how you’re really doing.
Our thoughts and feelings are intertwined. Combined, they compel us to action. So it really matters what we allow and entertain in our minds.
We’re living in a wild world with so many messages, images, and distractions aiming at us all. the. time.
Yet here’s an exciting and important truth: You have great freedom and power over your mind.
So how do you move toward a better thought-life? In Philippians Paul tells us to fix our thoughts (to dwell) on excellent and praiseworthy things.
Like what? So happy you asked…
- God’s identity — He is good, and what he does is good. (Psalm 119:68)
- Your identity in Christ — To those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)
- The beauty and blessings in your life — Every good and perfect gift is from above. (James 1:17)
Today I pray that God will light a fire, giving you greater desire to dwell on his Word daily, leading to a deeper knowledge and experience of who he is and how much he loves you.
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
John 8:31-32
