Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it.Matthew 7:13-14 NASB
We’re at a crossroads. We’re in a cultural and spiritual war. A great separation is taking place.
Jesus contrasts two thresholds. One gives way to death. The other leads to life.
Many choose the wide way. Why? Well, it’s easier. It’s popular. It’s crowded yet with ample room to roam. The flow feels right, at least at first. But there will be a bitter end.
Notice that Jesus gives only one invitation: the narrow gate. The preferred path isn’t up for debate.
However, he’s clear that this way is different, difficult, constricted. That word in the Greek (thlibo) means to suffer tribulation, among other things.
Trouble? Suffering? Ummm. No thanks. I prefer comfort and convenience.
But here’s what Jesus is really saying: Enter through me! I’m the way.
The way of Jesus leads to the cross, to death. Denial of self. Paradoxically, it’s the only way to find true life, abundant life, eternal life.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”Matthew 16:24-25 NIV
To escape the evil of this age, we must surrender our own will and walk in God’s ways.
We must separate ourselves from human philosophies so that we can be set apart, consecrated, devoted to God.
The gate you walk through will determine your destiny. Will you choose God’s path for you, or will you travel the road of least resistance?
Jesus came preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” He’s calling those near and far to change course and choose life.
The harvest is ripe. The workers are few. Souls are at stake. It’s time to be about our Father’s business.
